"Photography's heir to Hitchcock" was how the Telegraph defined her in 2012, in an article dedicated to her personality and work.
Alex Prager is an American photographer and film maker, based in LA and New York. All her films and photographs follow a certain pattern, and have a purpose.
This artist can be easily distinguished from the rest because of the authenticity of her works. Her works always have a 60s-70s theme, since the people in the captions are dressed accordingly, and the colors really differ from the 21th century. We can say that her inspiration may come from Alfred Hitchcock, as said before, or even the movie Pulp Fiction. "I like the primary colours of that time. I like the full curves of the classic female lead. These are strong things that the viewer instantly understands. They can bring their own references and memories." This quote is really important to makes us fully aware of what she wished to portray through her photographs.
Her photographs are movie stills where women are disguised in wigs, wearing heavy makeup, and acting very dramatically. The artist herself choses her protagonists' outfits, and location. She always prepares everything the way she desires for the perfect short film or photograph.
Depending on the photographs , it can be said that each album has a different theme. Even though all her works have her signature style on them, each album varies in theme. My personal favourite album is Face of the Crowd (2013), her most recent work. In this album, she depicts the society as a whole, always 1970s look, in public spaces. I believe that her intention is to make the viewer examine every single face of that picture, and consider what is ordinary and what isn't. I think that her photographs can be considered, too some extent, satirical, for they portray different actions, everyday actions, that in the pictures seem hilarious, or strange or grotesque. From what I've seen in every photograph, she really emphasizes women's faces. It's not always the same woman, but occasionally in certain images you find one woman, with a fancy wig, making a drama-queen-like facial expression that says it all...
When I see her photographs, I think art. She is an incredible artist; she gets models to make expressions on their faces, gets several people more, and creates a whole story for one photograph only. What I particularly like about her is her style, because when you see her work, you immediately know it's her. It requires certain skills and talent to create such works of art. Imagination plays a big role here, and I believe that was what made her who she is today.
"In Los Angeles, everything's possible," Alex Prager once said.
The images I will share with you today are exclusively from her album "Face of the Crowd". If you wish to see more works, visit her website: http://www.alexprager.com/
